A good period conversion, of a " Rare", 1851 pattern, percussion, four grooved Minie rifle. This rifle was probably converted for an Officer, as a Game rifle. The rifle being 55 inches overall with a regulation 39 inch, 4 grooved barrel. Sighted with a flip-up enfield sight graduated to 960 yards. The enfield pattern lock, unsigned and with no military marks. The well figured walnut half stock has a very crisp chequred grip and hand grip. The barrel is in good order, with minor pitting to the bore and clean outer surface. It shows various proofs and military acceptance marks. This is a very fine and well balanced rifle.
The "Minie rifle" had a very short service history, 1851-1856. The original four grooved minie rifle was produced in the Enfield factory, the .702 inch calibre using the conical "minie" bullet, which replaced the smooth bore musket. Very few were produced in the four grooved pattern and within two years the new three groove design was adopted.
