A very rare first pattern British figure of eight Naval Cutlass, Circa 1780. Heavy steel, fullered, spear point blade of 31 inches, over all 36 inches. The steel figure of eight basket and steel grip are tipical of this very rare pattern. This type of cutlass saw service in two major napoleonic battles, the Battle of the Nile, 1st August 1798 and Trafalgar, 21st October 1805, as well as many others. The blade is pitted and in some areas heavily. It also has it's original scabbard, a very rare item as most cutlasses were stored in racks. This is probably the rarest naval weapon on the market.
